George Henry Price, Age 36

George was the son of Mrs Price of Mayfield house, near the Chemical works, Dawley; he also had a sister, Mrs M Hollyhead who resided at Middleton House, Kemberton.

He had originally served with the Royal field artillery (213205) but as the war progressed had been transferred into an infantry regiment. In a January 1917 edition of the Dawley news George had written that he had spent Christmas and New Year’s Day in the trenches and it was awful Xmas wet & cold with any amount of mud.

I had some problems tracing George on the Commonwealth war graves commission but eventually found him listed as J. Price, but all his other details were correct.

George was wounded in action and died from his wounds on the 25th October 1918 less than a month before the war ended.

The burial return form for Montay Neuvilly Rd cemetery on which is J. Price Plot 2 — Row B — Grave 23. The form is dated 25/2/ 1920.

George’s father was Joseph and his mother Elizabeth, in 1891 the family was living in Ladies' Row, Hinkshay, but George was born at Horsehay and baptised on the 27th Aug 1882 at St Lukes, Doseley.
